Mtarfa is one of those places that had the potential to be a tourist attraction and site of heritage. However, it sits quietly and is overshadowed by Mdina facing it.
Back in the days of the British rule, Mtarfa was a whole British community. The British built military barracks and later added a hospital to treat the injured during WWI.
Eventually, the railway included Mtarfa too. You can see the bridge built on the valley to connect the two localities together. This has since been turned into a road. However, the little railway station is still there and has had different uses throughout the years. In recent times, the station functioned as a restaurant, and there are now plans to establish a veterinary clinic.
Despite Mtarfa's relatively small size, we only covered a section of it. Here is a map I made covering the section we explored.
